My pick of the new programs
As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows, or on PDAs under Palm OS or Windows CE.
GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS
Bearing capacity -- BabyFoot
A conventional square and rectangular pad footing design program specifically for the Palm Pilot, Handspring and Windows CE platforms.
Dynamics (behaviour and earthquake) -- PLAXIS Dynamics module
An add-on to the Plaxis FE program for the elasto-plastic analysis of vibrations in soils.
Geosynthetics -- Tensar Pave
A free program for designing unbound aggregate road pavements reinforced with Tensar geogrids.
Geotechnical software suites -- Geotechnical Survival Kit
An Italian collection of 100 Excel programs for carrying out various geotechnical calculations including index properties, SPT and CPT testing, bearing capacity and settlement of shallow foundations, pile design, jet grouting, determination of Ka and Kp.
Instrumentation -- I-Site
Provides graphical display of geotechnical and structural monitoring instrumentation data either locally or via the web. Includes automatic alarms with text messaging and faxing. Data are automatically updated to the software via hard wired link, remote cellular or land line access, or radio modem.
Laboratory testing (soil) -- WinSieve
Stores and presents grain size analysis charts in several standard or custom formats. Carries out classification using the USCS, USDA, AASHTO, International, Modified Wentworth and Australian systems.
Numerical analysis (soil) -- PLAXIS 3D Tunnel program
A finite element package specifically for the 3D analysis of deformation and stability of tunnels in soil and rock.
Piles (lateral loading and groups) -- MFoundation
A program for the design of bearing piles, tension piles and shallow foundations to Dutch design codes.
Piles (single) -- HeliCAP
Calculates the bearing and/or uplift capacity of AB Chance screw anchors and screw piles. Different sizes and types of helical anchors may be used for foundations in tension or compression, or for slope reinforcement. The program calculates anchor capacity, configuration and graphically displays the capacity vs. depth, and torque vs. depth for the tension, compression and tieback cases.
Reinforced slopes and walls -- Designing with Fortrac
A free program that undertakes internal design checks of geogrid reinforced slopes to BS 8006:1995 and UK Highways Agency advise note HA 68/94.
Retaining wall design -- GABION
Assists in the design of gabion retaining walls of arbitrary shape including overhangs requiring anchoring.
Settlement analysis -- MSettle
Determines the direct settlement, consolidation and secondary creep along verticals in a 2D geometry under various loading conditions and can include vertical drainage. It can use actual settlement measurements to improve soil parameter estimates via a fit procedure and can then determine more accurate predictions of future settlements.
Slope stability (soil) -- SLOPE STABILITY (Fine)
A low cost slope stability analysis program for circular (Bishop, Peterson) and polygonal (Sarma) slip surfaces.
GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS
Geoenvironmental database systems -- Contam Data System
A program for the management of analytical chemical test results that is compatible with the AGS format for electronic data transfer.
Groundwater flow (2D) -- SV Flux 2D
A 2D finite element seepage analysis program for saturated or unsaturated flow with automatic mesh generation and time-step refinement for transient problems.
Groundwater modelling -- MWell
A program for the design of pumped well dewatering (and recharge) systems. The head is determined and may be visualised as contoured time history plots showing the variation of head with time for all aquifers at a chosen horizontal position.
GENERAL PROGRAMS
Contract Planning and Management -- EARTH
An earthworks quantity calculation tool that takes cross-section data for both existing and proposed ground levels and calculates the volume of earth to be removed and added, allowing for soil shrinkage and bulking factors.
Data input -- Pocket EQuIS
A program that provides field data capture facilities on Windows CE and Palm PDAs for the EQuIS suite of geoenvironmental database programs. It can also be linked to a GIS map and a GPS receiver for positioning of sampling points.
Data validation -- AGS File Manager
It creates, edits and checks AGS format data files.
Database systems (with log production) -- GDM
A database that stores all forms of geological field data and existing documents. Borehole logs, maps and sections can be produced and there are procedures for automated geological modelling.
Geological modelling -- WinFence
Creates geological cross-sections and fence diagrams with links to the WinLog borehole log program.
Geophysics (surface) -- Rockware Visual Seismic
A visualisation tool for seismic data that allows highlighting of structures and amplitude, adjustment of the transparency of any object, and moving through the data by time, trace or inline.
Plotting (3D visualisation) -- Geospatial Explorer
A free program for 3D viewing of point data and grid data as isosurfaces.
Site procedures -- ECHANT
A program designed to improve sampling practice by the computation of the sampling fundamental error of particulate materials following the Pierre Gy theory.
