GGSD Newsletter - October 2003
*************************************************

Welcome to the ninth GGSD Newsletter, bringing you news of newly released geo-software and of updates to the Geotechnical and Geoenvironmental Software Directory (GGSD) at http://www.ggsd.com/

In this Newsletter:

* GGSD updates
* New and updated program entries
* My pick of the new programs

I have noticed three new trends in the geotechnical and geoenvironmental software market over the last year:

* The PDA has at last become a viable platform for site use and several of the main geotechnical/geoenvironmental data management systems now have an associated PocketPC field data capture program. As a result I have added a new software category to the GGSD of "Field data collection" under General Programs.

* The specialist software vendors are becoming aware of the global marketplace and hence a number of the recently released analysis and design programs are multi-lingual. Wherever I know the languages available these are stated in the GGSD at the end of the program description.

* There seems to be a growing trend of expensive, over-hyped, corporate management systems for environmental data. Those few that appear to cover "geo" aspects I have included in the GGSD. You can recognise them by the fact that no price is quoted (if you need to ask the price you can't afford it), and the program description is very short (when I strip out all of the marketing waffle from the two page press release, all I am left with is a couple of sentences of rather vague "facts"). I can't image who is taken in by this sort of non-technical marketing.

If you want to change the e-mail address that this Newsletter is sent to, or look through the archive of previous Newsletters, or if you wish to be removed from the mailing list, then visit the Newsletter page at http://www.ggsd.com/

My pick of the new programs

As always, this section has to be preceded by a disclaimer. The programs listed below are ones that caught my eye as being useful/interesting/different from the many submissions I receive. I have not tried any of these programs, and I am not making a recommendation. It is up to you to make your own choice. Some of these may not be "New" programs, but their entry in GGSD is new. That said, here is my pick. All the programs run under Windows, PocketPC or are accessed over the internet via a normal web browser.

GEOTECHNICAL PROGRAMS

Bearing capacity * sFooter

sFooter carries out the analysis of rectangular concrete footings for columns or walls. It considers both the geotechnical aspects and the footing design.

Drainage * CandeCAD

CandeCAD is a 2D, non-linear, finite element program for the soil-structure interaction analysis of buried pipes and culverts. It provides a CAD interface to the well known FHWA program CANDE.

Dynamics (soil-structure interaction) * DynaMat

DynaMat uses a 3D hybrid finite element method to estimate the equivalent dynamic stiffness and damping of vibrating, circular or rectangular machine foundations. Input parameters consist of the dynamic properties of the layered soil, foundation geometry and the vibration frequencies.

Geotechnical software suites * BETONexpress

BETONexpress is a program for designing concrete structures to Eurocode 2. It includes modules for the geotechnical design of footings and retaining walls to Eurocode 7 and for seismic design to Eurocode 8. The program is available in English, Greek and Norwegian.

Ground improvement * DC-Vibro

DC-Vibro carries out settlement and bearing capacity analysis of ground improved by vibro-compaction (stone columns) using the Priebe improvement factor to assess the stiffness modulus. Available in English and German.

Instrumentation * MonitoringPoint

MonitoringPoint is a web site that provides a GIS interface and tools for the on-line display and analysis of monitoring data. The data may be of any type (displacement, load, temperature etc) and may be automatically data-logged in real-time or manually read and batch uploaded in AGS Format.

Numerical analysis (soil) * FEM

FEM is one module of the geotechnical software suite GEO4 but is also available separately. It is a finite element analysis program with automatic generation of the mesh and boundary conditions, bar and beam elements, Elastic, Mohr-Coulomb and Drucker-Prager models, surcharges and groundwater modelling.

Piles (lateral loading and groups) * GROUP 3D

GROUP 3D analyses the behaviour of pile groups in 3D subjected to both axial and lateral loadings. The program generates the non-linear response of the soil in the form of t-z and q-w curves for axial loading, p-y curves for lateral loading and t-r curves for torsional loading. For closely spaced piles the pile-soil-pile interaction can be taken into account by introducing reduction factors for the p-y curves used for each pile.

Retaining wall design * R-WALL (Inducta)

R-WALL assesses the stability of reinforced masonry retaining walls to the Australian design codes AS4678-2002, AS3600 and AS3700. It also carries out the design of the concrete base and the masonry.

Rock mechanics * Tunnel Assistant

Tunnel Assistant is a program in development, and is therefore free. It carries out the design of underground openings using the empirical rock mass classifications of the Q system, the RMR system and the GSI - Hoek and Brown Criterion. It applies artificial intelligence to the analysis using an expert system technique, fuzzy logic, neural networks and statistical multiple regression methods.

Settlement analysis * FIDES-Settlement

FIDES-Settlement estimates foundation settlements according to the DIN 4019 Standard, for rectangular, circular and strip foundations. It is available in German and English.

Slope stability (rock) * ROCKPACK III

ROCKPACK III is a collection of 18 programs for rock slope stability analysis based on "Rock Slope Engineering" by Hoek and Bray. It considers plane, wedge and toppling failure, with water pressures, surcharges, seismicity and the design of rock bolt or cable support. This is a Windows update of the DOS version which has been widely used for many years in the USA.

GEOENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS

Contaminant modelling * AMBER

AMBER is a graphical tool that allows users to build dynamic compartmental models to represent the migration, degradation and fate of contaminants in an environmental system. The parameter values may be considered in a deterministic, probabilistic or time varying manner.

Groundwater modelling * DC-Dewatering

DC-Dewatering carries out the analysis of ground water lowering by gravity or vacuum wells around excavations of arbitrary shape and depth. It determines the volume of water to be pumped, the well capacity, the required number of wells and the ground water lowering at any location with time. Available in English and German.

GENERAL PROGRAMS

Borehole log production * gINT Logs

gINT Logs provides the borehole log functionality out of the well known geotechnical data management system, gINT. Log formats are fully customisable.

Field data collection * PocketSI

PocketSI runs on a PDA and provides field data capture facilities for ground investigation data. All data is output in AGS Format, giving compatibility with all the major geotechnical data management systems.

Mapping * MakeYourMap.net

MakeYourMap.net is a web based thematic mapping tool. Uploaded data is displayed on-line on a map as symbols scaled in proportion to the data value and associated with the relevant map feature.

Plotting (3D visualisation) * 3D Master

3D Master is a presentation tool that provides 3D visualisation and real-time animation of site data and numerical simulation results, overlaid with aerial photographs or GIS mapping.

Plotting (special) * RockWare StereoStat

RockWare StereoStat is a stereonet production and analysis program aimed mainly at structural geologists but includes many of the commonly required geotechnical facilities, including contouring.

Plotting and statistics * XLSTAT-Pro

XLSTAT-Pro is a statistical analysis Excel add-in providing descriptive statistics, principal component analysis, ANOVA, regression, logistic regression, multi-dimensional scaling, factor analysis, non-linear regression, box-plots, non-parametric tests and correspondence analysis.
