Description ROCK3D is a program that reconstructs the shape of potentially unstable rock blocks and determines the measures necessary to stabilise them. The measured orientation, position and length of fractures in the rock outcrop are input. It can deal with simple rock faces, as well as overhanging cliffs, benches and the roofs of underground excavations. It determines the principal families of fractures by cluster analysis. Using the Goodman and Shi key block theory the kinematic conditions that could give rise to unstable blocks are determined. For each of these kinematic conditions the program determines the maximum closed contours resulting from the connected traces of the joints that respect the kinematic condition under examination. It then reconstructs the blocks derived from the union of all the elementary polyhedra compatible with the kinematic conditions contained within the closed contours. The volume and surface area of each block are calculated, and with the known geomechanical parameters, the safety factor is determined under natural conditions together with the rock bolting necessary to obtain the required stability conditions. The program can optionally generate maps of pseudo-random joints that respect the statistical distribution of the frequencies and of the outlines as seen on the rock face. In this way it is possible to formulate hypotheses on the behaviour of the rock face after removal of rock, and so prepare a stabilisation design. The output comprises the plot of the traces of the joints, the stereographic projection of the joint families, the key block theory projections and the perspective or orthographic projection of the blocks. Print-outs can be generated of the input data and the results of the various phases of the calculation. Results can be cut and pasted to other programs or exported in Microsoft Word 97 format. The complete user manual is available on-line. Multilingual (Italian, English, French and Spanish). LAN supported. A full working demo version is available on the WWW.
